So how well have US and Canadian graduate schools been doing in placing their students in full-time academic positions over the past three years? Which schools are hiring? Whom are they hiring (and how many different positions have these individuals had in the past three years)?

Since its inception in 1990, Lingua Franca has collected and published the most complete listing of annual academic hirings in the liberal arts and sciences at four-year colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. As of this year, we are adding a second listing reflecting our collected records, in three-year spans, of first-time junior hirings.

These tables reflect approximately 15,400 first-time hirings to full-time junior positions, listed according to the disciplinary training of each, over the course of the 1998/99 2000/01 academic years at over six hundred colleges and universities. As many of the positions are (or were) for one-year positions only, some individuals may be listed more than once. The tables should be read as follows: the column titled "year" indicates the calendar year in which the individual, named in the fourth column, was hired and began his/ her appointment. The institution in the column titled "trained by" is the institution from which the individual received his/ her most advanced graduate training. The institution in the column titled "hired by" is the institution that hired the individual to a first-time, full-time junior position.

Obtained from the hiring institution, the individual or the training institution, information about graduate training has not, in all cases, been double-checked with each training institution.

Where we have a campus name (e.g., "Illinois, Urbana"), we use it. But someone trained there might just as well be listed under the general university name (e.g., "Illinois, U of").

Hirings and Tenurings 2001

LINGUA FRANCA goes to great effort to insure that our data is accurate and as complete as possible. However, we know that hirings & tenurings is, as we go to press, incomplete and still not free from all errors. Consequently, we cannot be responsible for errors and omissions, and readers are advised not to act on any of this information without verifying it.

HIRING INSTITUTIONS: If your institution is not fully represented, simply send us the name, title, and address of the single person in your administration who, each August, can give us your new tenurings and hirings. We will send that person the appropriate form.

GRADUATE INSTITUTIONS: We will send you an early draft of this list so that you can add any graduate placements we have missed. Tell us the name, title, and address of the single person in your graduate school who, each October, has the most complete list of your placements in the arts and sciences.
